Shamakhi is one of Azerbaijan's oldest towns, a former capital of the Shirvan realm set among vineyards on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. Its Juma mosque is among the oldest in the region, and nearby stand the Yeddi Gumbez tombs and the Diri Baba shrine; the surrounding hills feed a revived winemaking tradition.
